Parabens or any ingredient ending in – ‘paraben’ Parabens have been widely used in products to prevent bacteria growth since the 1950s. They are a class of commonly used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity,” reports the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC). This toxin is prevalent in lotion, shampoo, shaving cream, sunscreen, makeup and baby wash.

Mineral Oil or paraffin oil can be colorless, odorless, a very light mixture, and is a byproduct of the petroleum. It is an emollient/moisturizer and works by forming an oily layer on the top of the skin that traps water in the skin. Predominantly used for dry skin. Mineral oil is a common ingredient in baby lotions, cold creams, ointments, and cosmetics. It can produce skin acne and irritation. It clogs pores, not beneficial for skin.

Methylcloroisothiazolinone also referred to as MCI, is a preservative with antibacterial and antifungal effects within the group of isothiazolinones. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungi. These common preservatives are found in many liquid personal care products and have been linked to lung toxicity. Allergens and neurotoxicity are a growing concern. They are found in shampoo, conditioner, hair color, body wash, lotion, sunscreen, mascara, shaving cream, baby lotion, baby shampoo, hairspray, makeup remover, liquid soaps, and detergents.

Polyethylene Glycol ‘PEG’ is a potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor. This could increase the appearance of aging and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria. Used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products. Also used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners. Items ending in “;-eth’, TEA (triethanolamine) and 1,4 dioxane A carcinogenic contaminant of cosmetic products. Almost 50% of cosmetics containing ethoxylated surfactants were found to contain dioxane. It exerts is effects through inhalation, skin absorption, and ingestion. It is an irritant to mucous membranes. It is a neuro depressant as well. Prevalent in shampoo, hair spray, skin crème, sunscreen, baby soap.

Sodium lauryl or Laureth sulfate SLES is an anionic detergent and surfactant which means it breaks surface tension and separates molecules in order to allow better interaction between the product and your hair or skin. Found in many personal care products soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, hair detangler, body spray, lotion and liquid soap. It’s an inexpensive foaming agent. Causes skin damage or reactions and contains toxic contaminants.

Triclosan and trilocarban is an antibacterial and antifungal agent found in consumer products, including toothpaste, liquid soaps, detergents, toys, and surgical cleaning treatments. There is mounting scientific evidence documenting adverse health effects, including impacts to the thyroid hormone, a skin irritant and causes dryness. Ther is also compounding proof of antibiotic resistance, and water contamination. This is having a devasting impact on fragile aquatic ecosystems.

Fragrances that are not specifically marked ‘phthalate-free’. Phthalates and Bisphenol A (BPA) are man‐made chemicals called endocrine disruptors. They are used for a variety of purposes in plastics for vinyl flooring and personal care products. Many fragrances contain formaldehyde and phthalates. These toxins can affect hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, which are important for the reproductive system. Infertility, decreased sperm count, undescended testes, malformation of the penis are linked to phthalates. In addition, They can potentially interfere with normal growth and brain development.

Formaldehyde and ammonia; diaminobenzene. Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical that is used in building materials and to produce many household products. Commonly used as an industrial fungicide, germicide, and disinfectant, and as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories. Formaldehyde also occurs naturally in the environment. It is produced in small amounts by most living organisms as part of normal metabolic processes. Formaldehyde can make you feel sick if you inhale too much. People can have symptoms such as a sore throat, cough, scratchy eyes, and nosebleeds. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer. The most common form of cancer is of the nose and throat. The higher the level and the longer the exposure to this toxin, the greater the chance of getting cancer. It is often found in nail polish, nail polish remover, hair dye and some perfume.

Oxybenzone and cinnamates is a pale-yellow solid that is readily soluble in most organic solvents. Oxybenzone belongs to the class of aromatic ketones known as benzophenones. It is a component of many sunscreen lotions and sunscreen spray, marketed especially for use on children. Sunscreens commonly include ingredients that act as “penetration enhancers” and help the product adhere to the skin. As a result, many sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the body and can be measured in blood, breast milk, and urine samples. Oxybenzone can cause allergic skin reactions and may disrupt hormones. Acts like estrogen in the body and is associated with endometriosis in women. In addition, alters sperm production in animal studies.

Glycolic, AHA and BHA acids are colorless, odorless, and hygroscopic crystalline solids that are highly soluble in water. Glycolic acid is found in some sugar-crops. It is used in various skin-care products. Prevalent in trendy anti-aging crème, serum, and peels. Glycolic acid is an exfoliator. It removes the outer layer of dead skin cells on your skin. Always wear sunscreen, even more so when you’re using AHA’s like glycolic acid, as your skin is much more susceptible to sunburn. May cause irritation, redness, and possibly permanent damage. Use in moderation or not at all.
